A review collects the first studies found through familiar databases and concludes that the literature overwhelmingly agrees. Agreement may reflect which evidence was visible, searchable, eligible, and worth publishing. Before accepting the conclusion, identify what was observed, which assumptions connect it to the claim, and what practical judgment depends on that connection.
The relevant mechanism is this: search terms, databases, language, dates, inclusion rules, and citation networks select the body of evidence before synthesis begins. A disciplined analysis makes the chain explicit. Publish a question and protocol; search multiple routes; record exclusions; seek unpublished work; update the search; show the selection flow. The result is that readers can distinguish a systematic evidence set from a convenient pile of supportive studies. The chain supplies specific points at which a source, rival account, or later observation can challenge the argument.
The central claim is this: A synthesis inherits the selection process that created its evidence base. No search is literally exhaustive, and wider retrieval can add low-quality or irrelevant material that obscures the question. Apply the claim directly: document how you found the studies in your dossier and where contrary evidence might remain hidden. Use Support to identify the observation doing the most work, Uncertainty to name the strongest live rival, and Revision to specify a result that would move confidence. Write the answer as a testable statement, not a declaration of intellectual virtue. Prioritize the uncertainty that matters most for the decision, then explain why your revision test is more informative than an easier confirming example. Name the expected direction beforehand.
Textual observation. PRISMA asks reviews to report information sources, search strategies, selection processes, excluded studies, and synthesis methods. Read the opening source for the author’s actual distinction and note where the lesson goes beyond it. Paraphrase the reasoning, quote only the short phrase needed to anchor it, and mark any premise the text leaves undefended.
Empirical evidence. Trial registries, regulatory records, dissertations, reference lists, and expert contact can reveal completed or missing work outside journal databases. This record bears on a defined process but does not settle the lesson’s question by itself. Check population, period, outcome, and comparison before treating the record as support for the broader claim.
